News of the BCTGM’s boycott of Made-in-Mexico Nabisco spread throughout the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia last week. Armed with Check the Label fliers, laid off Nabisco worker Michael Smith was invited to speak to numerous gatherings and Democratic Caucus groups throughout the week including:
-Smith addressed about 300 AFL-CIO Labor Delegates during a special labor meeting held just prior to the Convention proceedings began;
-Check the Label materials were distributed by Nabisco 600 representatives outside the Black Caucus, the Hispanic Caucus, and the Youth Council meetings;
-Smith met with and discussed the campaign with U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Representative Keith Ellison and Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Simms;
-Smith spoke from the podium at the first ever DNC Labor Council meeting to an audience of about 200. Other speakers at the event included New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senator Elizabeth Warren, among others.
